The following post is from our Recovery-Centered Clinical System (RCCS) Tidbit of the Month series. Each month, the RCCS Steering Committee creates practices to support our recovery culture within our programs and among staff. Click here to learn more about the RCCS.

RCCS Tidbit of the Month: Holiday Triggers

A Component of the Five Awarenesses of the RCCS Program Culture

The holiday season brings both joy and challenges. While many celebrate with gatherings and traditions, others face unique stressors that can impact their recovery journey. At Telecare, we recognize these “holiday triggers” and help develop strategies for managing them effectively.

Understanding Holiday Triggers

Holiday triggers can include:

  • Family dynamics

  • Social pressures

  • Financial stress

  • Substance use exposure

  • Food-related challenges

  • Feelings of loss or loneliness

Through our Recovery-Centered Clinical System (RCCS) and Co-Occurring Education Group (COEG) curriculum, we provide tools and support for navigating these challenges while maintaining recovery goals.

Key Management Strategies

Our approach emphasizes practical skills:

  • Preparation and planning

  • Setting healthy boundaries

  • Emotional awareness

  • Active engagement in positive activities

  • Building support networks

The Power of Choice

We remind those in recovery that they have choices in managing triggers. This includes the ability to:

  • Decline challenging situations

  • Limit time at difficult events

  • Reach out for support

  • Focus on activities that strengthen recovery

Understanding that triggers are temporary – typically lasting about 90 seconds – helps develop confidence in managing challenging moments. Individuals can navigate the holiday season through education, support, and practical tools while maintaining their recovery journey.
